What lithium batteries are used in electric cars?

Electric vehicles are powered by lithium-ion batteries, known for their rechargeable nature and high energy density. These batteries consist of several cells, each containing a positive electrode, typically made of lithium cobalt oxide, lithium manganese oxide, or lithium iron phosphate. The negative electrode is commonly composed of graphite. Separating these electrodes is an electrolyte, typically an organic solvent with lithium salt, facilitating the movement of lithium ions between the electrodes during the charging and discharging process. Tesla predominantly utilizes NCA (Nickel Cobalt Aluminum) batteries, whereas other automakers like GM, Ford, and Hyundai opt for NCM (Nickel Cobalt Manganese) or LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries for their electric vehicles.
